Why We Love It

For the realtor on the go, the latest Apple MacBook Air M1 takes our top spot as being nearly perfect for all situations.

This Apple laptop is lightweight and portable coming in at only 2.8 lb., yet still packs a powerful punch with its 8-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine.  If you also edit your own property photos, then this powerful laptop will even handle it with ease.

The M1 chip is not only one of the most powerful processors on the market, it's one of the most efficient for mobile applications and is the same used in the more expensive Apple MacBook Pro.

Do you spend a lot of time showing to multiple clients all day?  No problem!  The MacBook Air offers incredible energy efficiency and gets high marks for long battery life at 18 hours for video and 15 hours for the wireless web. The beautiful Retina display is perfect for editing documents and is easily readable both indoors or outdoors, and the M1 GPU delivers stunning visuals whether you're working on media or browsing the web.

This backlit keyboard is one of our favorites too. This magic keyboard feels solid, has great response, and has just the right amount of bounce.

What You Should Know

The MacBook series has been an industry staple for more than a decade and holds its own against many windows counterparts.  But if you have not already bought into the Mac ecosystem then it can be an added expense to consider in case you need to purchase additional software.

Something we like about the new M1 series is that you can now run iOS apps natively on your Mac. This is a huge bonus for iPhone users. You now have access to tons of new software that you never had before.

We were slightly disappointed by the 720p webcam on this model which feels like an afterthought, but that will still get the job done for virtual meetings. The good news is that the new MacBook Air M2 which is due to come out soon solves this and includes improvements all around.

No matter your need, you really can't go wrong with the MacBook Air.  This is hands down the best laptop for real estate agents, and even the price is extremely competitive for an Apple product!

What You Should Know

The MacBook Pro has been an industry staple for more than a decade. But if you have not already bought into the Mac ecosystem then it can be an added expense to consider.

We love Macs for content creators, but there are some exceptions where you may want to go with a PC instead even if you prefer Macs.  For example, the gaming industry is still largely dominated by PC compatibility. Because of this, we do not recommend buying a Mac if you plan to play PC games when not working.

You will also want to confirm that any critical realtor software you need comes with a Mac version.  However, most modern CRM tools today are migrating to web versions, so this will likely not be a problem.

Ready to take the plunge on a MacBook Pro but don't like the price?  Don’t worry!  If our pick is outside of your budget, there are still mid-range laptops from Apple that you may be able to afford.

Check out the other MacBook Pro models and even an Apple MacBook Air, which we think is a better all-around laptop for real estate agents anyway.

The Surface Pro 8 also features a thin bezel that allows for an 11% larger display than the previous model.  It is also super bright with a very accurate color gamut.  This makes it perfect for working on complex documents, watching presentations, or editing photos.

Additionally, we love the overall performance of this latest generation Surface.  The newer Intel Core i7 CPU is twice as fast as the previous Surface 7.

If you are looking for a convertible laptop with a tablet mode, or just want the most versatile device, this is it!

What You Should Know

If you're in the market for a 2-in-1 laptop, the Microsoft Surface Pro is a great option. It's packed with features and gets better with every new version. That said, there are a few things you should be aware of before making your purchase.

The most important thing you should know is that the keyboard and stylus pen is sold separately.  Yes, you heard right!  And you will want be buy these, so plan to budget a little extra.  You can check the latest price on Amazon here.

Also, independent tests have shown that while it has decent battery life, it is less than advertised, coming in at around 10 hours of battery life with power-saving mode enabled. However, this is still better than most other laptops on the market.  Just keep in mind that manufacturers are often known to inflate their battery life estimates, so we're not surprised.

Another thing to be aware of is that the Surface Pro can run a little warm - or even hot and loud if you're doing some heavy processing. But in most cases, this won't be an issue and is actually fairly normal for a laptop of this type.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the Surface Pro has a minimal number of USB-C ports. But if you need more than one USB type-C port or different types of USB ports, simply get a hub.  All in all, the Surface Pro is a great 2-in-1 laptop and well worth your consideration.

Best PC Laptop For Realtors

Dell XPS 13 9310

Why We Love It

So, you don’t like Macs.  That's understandable, a lot of people don't!  Or maybe you have software that only runs on a PC or you like to do a little gaming on the side.  Not a problem.  The Dell XPS 13 series has you covered!

We love Dell laptops because they are a great compromise between affordability and excellent performance. The XPS 13 is no exception, and will handle just about any workload you throw at it.  Plus, the Dell name has a long history of quality and is well regarded for building powerful and reliable PCs and laptops.

Starting with a recent generation Intel Core i7 EVO processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, Intel Iris Xe graphics, and a touchscreen FHD+ display, this is our pick for the best Windows laptop.  Whether you are doing photo editing, or just need a dependable machine to run your critical applications, the Dell XPS is up to the task.

We especially love the display quality on this 13.4" FHD+ touchscreen.  It has an excellent color gamut and is one of the brightest FHD displays you will find.  And, if 1080p is not enough resolution for you, Dell has a 4k OLED version also available.

The case is aluminum and has a premium feel, and at only 2.8 pounds combined with longer battery life than most laptops, it is sure to be an easy travel companion.

In our opinion, this is the best Dell laptop for your money when portability is a concern, and is also the best laptop for real estate agents that need a PC.

Specs At A Glance

CPU: 11th gen Intel Core i7-1195G7
Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics
Storage: 512GB SSD
Screen: 13.4 inch FHD+ (4K OLED version available)
Weight: 2.8 lb.
Size: 11.64 x 7.82 x 0.58 inches
Battery Life: Up to 14 hours

What You Should Know

As a Windows laptop, it's hard for other laptops to compete with the Dell XPS.

One thing we should point out, however, is that we've seen many reviews of Dell laptops underperforming their stated battery life by a couple of hours.  But most of those reports were from the higher resolution models, which tend to consume more power.  We think you will have no problem getting a full day from the stated 14 hours of battery life on the FHD+ model.

This model also features two Thunderbolt 4 USB ports which will allow you to connect to just about any modern device, however, if you need USB-A ports you may need a USB-C port adapter, or a third-party USB hub if you need more USB type-C ports.  At the time of writing this review, we hear that Dell did at least see fit to include a USB-A converter, which we think is great considering that most other manufacturers do not.

If you plan to do any sort of video editing with this laptop, just be aware that it does not have a discreet graphics card.  However, we've seen benchmarks indicating that the Intel Iris Xe graphics is more than capable of rendering up to 4k video on this laptop, albeit, at slower speeds.

If you plan to do any sort of gaming or heavy video editing, you may prefer to get a gaming machine with a discreet graphics controller.  However, they tend to come at a price and add significant weight to the machine.  The Dell XPS 15 is also a great choice and has a dedicated NVIDIA GPU.

Best Laptop For Realtors On A Budget

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14-Inch

Why We Love It

Not everyone can afford the all-around best laptop for real estate agents, but you don't have to! Lenovo laptops have been a top choice by businesses all over the world for years. Many people don’t realize that before Lenovo bought the brand, they were owned by IBM. Yes, the same IBM that has dominated business computing for decades. For many people, they are synonymous with a business laptop.

Lenovo today is well known for making laptops and has a reputation for being rock-solid and affordable business machines, with thousands of online reviews to prove it.

Whether you are working from home or traveling daily, this affordable laptop will get the job done without draining your wallet.  Plus, at only 3.11 pounds, it's highly portable.  And with some of the best ratings on Amazon, we feel this is your best value as well.

The AMD Ryzen 5 processor, AMD Radeon 7 GPU, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD storage will handle most daily business tasks, and has average display quality of 1080p which is still big enough to get the job done.

We also love the comfortable backlit keyboard on this machine as it has great keyboard ergonomics, and the built-in fingerprint reader is a plus. This is a really good laptop for your money that is also upgradable, meaning it can grow with you.

Specs At A Glance

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500U
Graphics: AMD Radeon 7
Storage: 256GB SSD
Screen: 14” (1920 x 1080)
Weight: 3.11 lb.
Size: 12.76 x 8.49 x 0.78 inches
Battery Life: 11 hours

What You Should Know

This is the best affordable laptop so it certainly may not meet the demands of a power user, but that is to be expected with a budget pick. However, for the average realtor on the go, a moderate machine capable of running basic business applications and surfing the web is usually fine, and the ThinkPad 3 fits the bill.

If you are encoding video or doing a lot of multi-tasking you may want to consider upgrading to something with an Intel Core i5 or better CPU. Over the past decade, modern operating systems and applications have grown to take full advantage of the hardware available, and the stock 8GB of RAM should be seen as the bare minimum these days.

In fact, no matter what your needs are, we highly recommend planning an upgrade of the RAM and/or the drive if you think you will need more down the road. Alternatively, you may want to check out a model that already comes with 16GB RAM.

If you are looking for better than average battery life, there are better options. However, the stated 11 hours of battery life is more than enough to get you through most days.  If you plan to do virtual meetings, this model does include a 720p webcam, which is not the best, but will certainly do the job.

Other notable features include an SD card slot so there's no need to buy an external SD card reader, a backlit keyboard, a built-in fingerprint reader, plenty of USB ports including USB-C ports, and an audio jack.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with a Lenovo laptop. They are light, reliable, upgradable, solid, and affordable. This model is not the most lightweight laptop in their lineup, but it's not bad either. If we had a category for the best lightweight laptop, this would still be on the shortlist.

The IdeaPad model is a fantastic option for those looking for the best value on a tight budget.

Buyer's Guide - How To Make An Informed Choice

There are many different styles of laptops on the market.  You have gaming laptops, business laptops, highly portable laptops, 2-in-1 laptops that can convert into a tablet, laptops made for content creators, and many more.  The list goes on and on.

Not every real estate agent may have the same needs or wants.  Most will generally be on the go and need quick access to their laptop when needed.  However, the rest will depend on what features you need.  Because of this, design is very subjective.

If you care about appearances, you may want a very professional or minimalistic design.  However, if you care more about design, you may have to give up some of the features you need.

Many design aspects will impact functionality, which a few exceptions.  For example, most laptops with a sleek design do so by compromising on things such as cooling.  Poor cooling usually means it runs hotter, which then means they can't pack in as much performance.  This is why you see gaming laptops that need the best performance are often very large and bulky.

Similarly, there is a whole breed of laptops called a 2-in-1, which is both a laptop and tablet in one.  These are very portable tablet computers that will let you change the laptop mode to a tablet.  They typically include the option to attach a keyboard separately, but some have the keyboard built in.

Due to the smaller size, they usually lack in terms of performance or connectivity options.  However, if you need both a tablet and a portable laptop but don't care as much about the performance then these can be a great option.

Our recommendation is to look at functionality first over design.  Consider how you will use your laptop, find the features you need, and then narrow your search to those with a design you like the best.

Size and Weight

Most laptop buyers do so for portability.  This especially holds true for most real estate agents who are always on the go.  So one of the first questions you should ask yourself is how often will you be traveling? If the answer is frequent, then you should consider size and weight as important factors.

It’s easy to dismiss this when handling a laptop in person.  Most laptops by themselves seem fairly light. However, if traveling you will likely not be carrying just the laptop alone, but the power adapter, accessories, paperwork, and other items. These things add up fast!

For that reason, we recommend going as light as you can depending on your use. Most often the lightest laptops are less powerful and screen size suffers, so you will need to judge carefully to determine what works best for you. This is a personal decision.

We highly recommend staying under 3.5 lb. as a good rule of thumb. This is based on personal experience. We also find that thickness is more important than overall length and width. So get the thinnest machine that you can under 3.5 lb. and your back and bag will thank you.

Battery Life

As a real estate agent on the go, you also can't ignore the importance of battery life.  After all, you won't always have access to power when showing properties.  And imagine how unprofessional it would be to run out of power with a client.  You want to be prepared.

In almost all cases, you'll want to narrow your focus to the best battery life you can find. However, you should consider your amount of travel and work backward from there in terms of the actual battery life you need.

As a general rule, we would recommend that real estate agents look for a laptop battery that has at least 8 hours of average battery life for general use.

Do also keep in mind that many laptop manufacturers drastically over estimate their stated battery life.  Because of that, we generally recommend validating their claims by reading third-party reviews.  Where available, we always do this before bringing you a product recommendation

Durability is always important for a laptop, but even more so if you are going to be on foot a lot.  Inevitably, you may accidentally drop your machine, and the last you want is for it to go silent.

What's durable for you is also highly subjective, and depends on other factors that you care about most.  For example, metal enclosures are great and durable, however, they can also bend if dropped hard enough and tend to get hot.  Plastic, on the other hand, will more likely crack if dropped, but may not deform.

Glass screens are also fantastic to look at, but they can more easily shatter.  And how clumsy are you with your cup of coffee?  How fast and easy will it be to clean if you spill something on the keyboard?

These are all things you need to consider when selecting a laptop for durability.  There is no such thing as an indestructible laptop unless you want to carry one of those bricks that the military uses.  Just consider how you will use yours, what matters the most to you, and then narrow your search to accommodate.

We pick laptops that are generally durable in most situations and have great brand reputations for support.  This way we know if the inevitable does happen, you have options for getting to repaired.

Display / Screen

We can't ignore the importance of a good laptop display. After all, this is what you will be looking at all day! Consider what is most important to you.  Do you have trouble reading small print?  Do you often deal with eye strain?  Will you be editing color-sensitive media like creating graphics, photos or videos for your listings?  If you answered yes to any of these you should limit your search to the best laptop screens you can find.

If you need the most screen real estate possible, we would normally recommend nothing smaller than 14".  However, real estate agents typically need extra portability so you may want to also consider 13" or better.

Another important consideration is screen brightness and contrast.  These are just as important for those editing media, as this can have an impact on color accuracy.  It's also important if you are going to be using your laptop outdoors frequently.

Picking the right type of RAM is easier than you might think. As with our typical recommendation on processors, more is usually always better.

Operating systems today are using more RAM and storage capacity out of the box than ever before. But as computers become more capable, this is inevitable.

RAM is like your short-term memory. As you run applications, your laptop will use RAM to store information for quick access. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run at the same time. If you use more than you have, your computer substitutes your local storage drive instead, making your laptop seem sluggish.

We consider 8GB of RAM to be the absolute minimum for most laptops today. However, if you plan to run more than a couple of applications at a time, you would be wise to start your search at no less than 16GB.

A storage drive is primarily designed for long-term data storage such as your operating system, applications, and personal data. It doesn't need to be as fast as RAM. However, the speed and storage capacity of your drive does affect your overall laptop performance, which is why newer models now offer an option for SSD storage.

SSD is short for solid-state drive and is a type of storage space with no moving parts. This allows your storage to run faster and be less affected by physical damage, which is a very useful thing for a laptop!

Optimally, no less than a 512MB SSD storage will do in our opinion, unless you are on a tight budget. In that case, you can get by with 256GB, but you may want to also consider an additional external storage device. If you intend to store large photos or videos, you may want an even larger drive.

You will undoubtedly use external devices with your laptop. However, understanding what types of ports and connectors are available on your laptop today is somewhat less important than it used to be unless you are running specialized devices.

For most realtors, standard USB-C ports will do the job.  Many ultra-portable and budget laptops may only have one or two USB Type-C ports, but that is okay.  A USB hub can be purchased which allows you to connect multiple USB-type devices to one port.  If you intend to give many presentations, you may also want to consider an HDMI port.

Most people would assume that you need the best performance possible in a laptop.  This may be true if you are a content creator, gamer, or just a power user, but most real estate agents are not.

If you are simply needing access to web applications, your CRM, and basic office tools then you will likely not need a very powerful machine.  In fact, most affordable laptops will likely do that job just fine.

However, if you already know you will be running PC games or heavy applications such as creative tools to edit photos and video, then stop right here and get a machine with powerful graphics, preferably with the best discreet NVIDIA graphics card you can afford, and latest i7 or better processor.

In these situations, you will narrow your search to a gaming laptop if you are looking at PCs.  This is not strictly necessary, but the processing time you will save rendering video with a quality graphics card instead of integrated Intel Iris or Intel UHD graphics is dramatic.

For everyone else that is just an average user, there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind when deciding on the performance level you need or are okay with.

Laptop manufacturers will often save on processor costs first by using outdated or poor-performing processors in their budget models. This means that you can expect budget computers to be slower and show their age much sooner than their latest and greatest counterparts.

At the same time, you can usually expect the more expensive machines to have a better processor and speed.  And as the next generation hardware comes out, what was once the best yesterday is now budget today.

While laptop manufacturers are playing this game, software companies are continually updating their operating systems and applications to take advantage of this new hardware.  But it usually takes them a little time to catch up.

Our simple recommendation is to always buy the most expensive laptop you can afford, and avoid budget machines unless you can’t help it.  At the same time, if you do get an affordable laptop it doesn't mean it will underperform.  In most cases, it just means that it may show its age faster than a premium model.

We recommend sticking to a mid-range CPU such as the Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, or better.

FAQs On The Best Laptop For Realtors

You're a realtor and you need a laptop that can keep up with your on-the-go lifestyle.

But with so many different laptops on the market, it can be hard to know which one is right for you.

We've done the research for you and found the best laptop for realtors. Check out our list of the most frequently asked questions about the best laptops for realtors to learn more.

What laptops do most real estate agents use?

There is no definitive answer to this question since real estate agents use a variety of laptops depending on their personal preferences and the needs of their businesses.

However, some of the best laptops among real estate professionals include the MacBook Pro, the Dell XPS, and the Microsoft Surface Pro.

Each of these laptops has its advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to choose one that will best meet the specific needs of your business.

What computers do realtors use?

Yes, real estate agents need laptops. Laptops allow agents to work from anywhere and keep important files and documents with them at all times.

In addition, laptops can be used for marketing purposes, such as creating property listings and sending emails to clients.

Is a laptop or iPad better for real estate agents?

There isn't necessarily a clear answer as to whether a laptop or iPad is better for real estate agents. It really depends on what type of work the agent does and what type of device they are most comfortable using.

Some agents might prefer the larger screen of a laptop for working with clients, while others might find an iPad or tablet to be more convenient for carrying around with them on showings.

Ultimately, it's up to each individual agent to decide which type of device works best for them.

Which MacBook is best for realtors?

There are a few different MacBooks that would be good for realtors, but the MacBook Air would be the best choice for most.

First and foremost, it is lightweight, small, and easy to carry. Plus, it has the power and performance to handle all of the tasks that a realtor needs to do, and it also has a fantastic display so you can view photos and documents in high definition in a variety of lighting situations.

What does a realtor need in a computer?

Just like any other profession, a real estate agent needs a computer that can handle the demands of their job. Most real estate agents are on the go, showing properties, and working with clients. Some may even handle their creative content for their listings.

In general, a real estate agent needs a computer that is portable, durable, reliable, has great battery life, and is fast enough to handle the necessary software. If planning to work on photos and videos, it may also be necessary to get a more powerful machine with a quality display and graphics controller.

Is a surface pro good for realtors?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but we think the Surface Pro is a fantastic option for many realtors, as it offers a lot of features and functions that can be useful in this profession.

For example, the Surface Pro comes with Microsoft Office pre-installed, which can help keep track of client information and create listing presentations. The Surface Pro is also lightweight and portable, making it easy to take with you when meeting with clients or showing properties.

Additionally, the Surface Pro's touchscreen display can be helpful for quick note-taking or using it as a reference while walking a property.

How can technology help real estate agents?

Real estate agents can use technology to help them in several ways. First, by using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, they can keep track of their clients and contact them easily.

Additionally, many real estate websites offer lead generation tools that allow agents to identify potential customers who are searching for properties in their area. By having a strong online presence, agents can also reach more people and market their services more effectively.

Additionally, there are several apps that real estate professionals can use to stay organized and on top of their workload.

Will technology take over real estate?

With the advent of consumer real estate websites like Zillow and online transactions, property buyers and sellers no longer need to meet in person, or in many cases no longer need an agent to broker a sale.

This not only saves time and money but also makes the process more efficient and secure. Additionally, thanks to virtual reality technology, people will be able to view properties from the comfort of their own homes without even leaving their living room.

However, we believe there will always be a need for real estate agents, as not everyone will be comfortable shopping for a home online. It is more likely that technology will change the way real estate agents work and interact with buyers than take it over completely.

Is technology changing real estate?

Yes. Technology is changing real estate in a few ways.

First, technology is making it easier for people to find information about properties. With websites like Trulia and Zillow, people can search for properties all over the country without having to go to a physical real estate office.

Second, technology is making it easier for people to buy and sell properties. With services like PayPal and escrow.com, people can buy and sell properties without having to worry about exchanging money or signing contracts.

Third, technology is making it easier for people to invest in property. With services like RealtyShares, people can invest in property without having to worry about being a real estate expert.

What software do real estate agents use?

There is no one set of software that all real estate agents use. However, there are several programs that many real estate agents use in their businesses. Some popular programs include:

  • Salesforce for managing customer relationships and sales pipeline
  • Microsoft Office Suite for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
  • Google Maps for mapping properties and plotting directions
  • Box for online file sharing and storage
  • Zillow for lead generation
